That’s why one of America’s favorite retail store chains is using Hughes Breakroom TV to help improve employee satisfaction, loyalty and performance. Hughes has more than two decades of experience providing business television and interactive distance learning solutions to the retail market.

The retail giant, who specializes in department store hard goods and clothing, is installing Hughes Breakroom TV in the employee rooms of its 1,100 stores nationwide, delivering commercial television and corporate messages on the same screen.

Breakroom TV is an integrated video communications and employee information system delivered as a turnkey service by Hughes. Through a centrally managed network of HDTVs, the retailer is able to display customized company content next to live TV to keep employees informed about their store performance and, as importantly, the good things the company is doing in the community.

Hughes Breakroom TV was implemented by the retailer’s HR and corporate communications departments as part of an overall initiative to improve the employee break room experience, including room makeovers and upgraded amenities. Because most employees don’t have corporate email accounts and spend most of their hours on the showroom floor without access to computers, the company saw an opportunity to reach them during breaks and shift changes.

TV programs play in one window while corporate content is displayed alongside as well as below on a scrolling ticker. The system enables the retailer to inform employees about how they are making a difference in the world through philanthropic efforts with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Breast Cancer Awareness. Breakroom TV also fosters store culture by highlighting birthdays, promotions, events and individual achievements. Healthy store competition is also enhanced by displaying what the individual store’s sales and service goals are and how they compare to others.

Driving Store Results

The retailer says that Breakroom TV is already starting to deliver big dividends in employee engagement. Employee satisfaction is up because quality break times mean more effective employees when they are back on the floor. The technology also helps cultivate greater employee loyalty by bringing a corporate presence into the store that shares its corporate values with the front line. And real-time updates of key performance indicators on the big screen foster greater pride and initiative in individual performance.

The core content is developed at corporate headquarters and distributed over the retailer’s broadband network. The system also enables store managers to customize local content for each of their stores using a simple web-based interface. Working with the retailer, Hughes developed simple templates for store manager input. Store managers input local content and the system automatically updates the correct store display. The corporate programming runs on a continuous 15-18 minute loop, which reflects the average amount of time an employee spends in the breakroom. The corporate content is updated regularly throughout the week.

The retailer selected Hughes due to its ability to deliver a turnkey video infotainment solution to its 1,100 stores, as well as provide on-going maintenance and support for a nationwide deployment. Hughes provides a 55-inch flat-screen HDTV, a Hughes SST- 1000 Media Player and Sling Media SlingboxTM at each location. The entire network is managed by a Hughes MediaGate Server located in the corporate data center.

Breakroom TV is designed to make the breakroom more enjoyable by providing employees live TV along with important company information tailored to their needs. As this retailer discovered, it’s an effective and fun way for employees to consume information, resulting in happier, smarter employees who improve the brand and customer experience.
